Program Learning Objective
The Chemistry Research Program provides students with a comprehensive understanding of both fundamental and applied chemical concepts. Participants will acquire hands-on experience with laboratory techniques such as synthesis, compound analysis, and characterization. The program emphasizes the development of critical thinking, experimental design, and technical writing skills. Project options might include investigating chemical reactions for sustainable energy solutions, researching innovative materials for industrial use, or examining chemical pathways relevant to pharmaceutical development.
Feel free to reach out and schedule a complimentary consultation with our counselor, as each mentorship program is tailored to match an individual’s level of expertise and research interests.
Program Outline
Week 1:
The student will study the fundamentals of green chemistry and the environmental challenges of traditional polymers. They will conduct a literature review using databases like Google Scholar and PubMed, and finalize the research topic, objectives, and research questions in collaboration with their mentor.
Week 2:
The student will research renewable and biodegradable materials that can be used for polymer synthesis. They will then develop a hypothesis about the mechanical and environmental benefits of these materials, drawing from relevant scientific articles.
Week 3:
The student will receive tutorial and video demonstrations on safe lab practices and experimental design. They will create an experimental plan for polymer synthesis, detailing reagents, equipment, and step-by-step procedures to ensure reproducibility.
Week 4:
Week 5:
The student will be introduced to characterization techniques such as virtual FTIR spectroscopy and DSC simulations. Using video tutorials and data sets, they will learn to analyze spectral data to understand the polymer’s molecular structure and thermal properties.
Week 6:
The student will use analysis platforms (such as OpenLCA) to assess the biodegradability and sustainability of the synthesized polymers. They will simulate degradation processes and study the polymers’ environmental compatibility.
Week 7:
The student will write their research report remotely, receiving feedback from their mentor. They will refine their methods, analyze any challenges encountered during the research, and troubleshoot potential issues.
Week 8:
The student will create a presentation summarizing their findings, utilizing digital tools like PowerPoint or Google Slides for visual design. They may discuss the potential societal impact of the green polymer in sustainable packaging. Final research papers will be submitted via a shared online platform. The mentor will complete a final evaluation to be given to the student.
