Environmental Science Research Program

Program Learning Objective

The Environmental Science Research Program is designed to prepare students to address pressing environmental challenges. Participants will study topics such as ecosystem processes, sustainability practices, climate dynamics, and the interaction between humans and the environment. They will also gain hands-on experience in research techniques, including field data collection, environmental assessment, and GIS mapping technologies.

Feel free to reach out and schedule a complimentary consultation with our counselor. Each mentorship program is tailored to match an individual’s level of expertise and research interests.

Program Outline

Week 1:

Students are introduced to key environmental science concepts, including ecosystem dynamics, climate change, and sustainability. They explore potential research topics, such as renewable energy, biodiversity conservation, or water pollution, while learning tools like literature databases and environmental impact frameworks to guide their topic selection.

Week 2:

Students conduct a systematic review of academic and scientific literature, using tools like Google Scholar and reference management software (e.g., Zotero). They critically analyze gaps in the existing research and refine a specific, actionable research question aligned with their selected topic.

Week 3:

Students learn how to design their research methodology based on their topic, choosing techniques like field surveys, water sampling, or remote sensing. Tools such as survey design platforms (e.g., Google Forms), GPS devices, or GIS software are introduced.

Week 4:

Students engage in data collection activities, such as conducting field surveys, analyzing soil or water samples, or using remote sensing imagery. Tools like environmental monitoring kits, spectrophotometers, and online GIS platforms (e.g., ArcGIS) are employed. Virtual simulations are provided for students unable to conduct fieldwork. The mentor will complete a mid-point evaluation to be given to the student.

Week 5:

Students organize and clean their collected data using tools such as Microsoft Excel, R, or Python for data manipulation. They learn basic statistical analysis and graphical representation to identify trends and patterns, with mentor guidance on preliminary interpretations.

Week 6:

Students analyze their findings in relation to global environmental challenges, such as the UN Sustainable Development Goals. They explore the use of tools like policy analysis frameworks and mapping software to identify implications for policy or community action.

Week 7:

Students begin drafting key sections of their research paper, such as methodology, results, and analysis. The mentor provides feedback on academic writing, emphasizing clarity, argumentation, and the use of citation tools like EndNote or Mendeley.

Week 8:

Students finalize their research paper, addressing mentor feedback and refining their arguments and conclusions. The mentor will complete a final evaluation to be given to the student. They discuss how their findings contribute to the broader environmental science field and consider future research directions.
