Health Sciences Research Program

Program Learning Objective

The Health Sciences Research Program is designed to immerse students in the core principles of research across disciplines such as public health, biomedical sciences, and healthcare systems. Through activities like data analysis, research design, and literature review, students will enhance their critical thinking and problem-solving abilities. They will also gain hands-on experience using tools such as statistical software, laboratory techniques, or public health databases. Projects may focus on topics like the impact of nutrition on chronic diseases, examining health disparities, or exploring innovative treatments and technologies.

Feel free to reach out and schedule a complimentary consultation with our counselor. Each mentorship program is tailored to match an individual’s level of expertise and research interests.

Program Outline

Week 1:

The student works with their mentor to define the scope of the research, reviewing advanced research paradigms such as longitudinal studies or randomized controlled trials. Together, they identify a specialized area of focus and begin building an advanced understanding of the field.

Week 2:

The student conducts a detailed literature review, utilizing advanced databases like PubMed and Scopus. Weekly one-on-one discussions help refine a unique research question, ensuring it aligns with current gaps and challenges in the health sciences.

Week 3:

Student develops a research design tailored to their project, selecting complex methodologies such as mixed-methods research or cohort studies. The mentor provides insights into specialized techniques, including biostatistical sampling or molecular analysis.

Week 4:

The mentor introduces the student to ethical complexities in health research, including IRB processes and global regulatory standards. The student prepares a mock ethical approval document or proposal, receiving detailed feedback on improving compliance and ethical integrity. The mentor will complete a mid-point evaluation to be given to the student.

Week 5:

Student learns sophisticated data analysis techniques, including multivariate regression, machine learning applications in health data, and survival analysis. Utilize advanced tools such as Python, R, or Tableau for data visualization and interpretation.

Week 6:

The student begins drafting a research manuscript under close mentor guidance. Detailed feedback sessions focus on strengthening methodology, interpreting findings, and enhancing clarity. The student also refines their data visualizations using advanced tools like Tableau.

Week 7:

The mentor works closely with the student to develop a professional research paper. Practice sessions help hone the student’s ability to articulate their work, addressing potential questions from an academic or professional audience.

Week 8:

Student presents their completed research project to the mentor in a mock symposium-style setting. The mentor provides feedback and discusses pathways for real-world application, further research opportunities, or possible publication avenues. The mentor will complete a final evaluation to be given to the student.
